The purpose of Lesson 5C is for students to model systems approaches as they learn about today’s scientific process. Specifically, students will use mathematical and computer-based modeling to make predictions. The scientific process includes experimental bench work (such as what they are completing in Lesson 5A), collaborating/connecting to others' research, and using computational techniques to harness data in order to better understand and predict changes in systems. This lesson gives students the opportunity to both learn from real-world scientists by reading primary research, and to learn the process of predicting future outcomes using models. The two models in this lesson are developed from current research on ocean acidification at the internal genetic level and the external ocean ecosystem level. Students should be guided in choosing the model activity, based on their interest and background knowledge.
